Open Season is your annual opportunity to review your health, dental, vision and flexible spending benefits and make changes for the upcoming benefit year.

For Postal Service employees and annuitants, the Postal Service Health Benefits (PSHB) Program is the health insurance program to review during Open Season.

📊 Compare More Than the Premium

The premium is only one part of the cost of a health plan. Before choosing a plan, also compare:

• Deductible

• Doctor and specialist copays

• Prescription costs

• Out-of-pocket maximum

• Provider and hospital network

• Maternity and family benefits

• Your expected healthcare needs

Example: Blue Cross and Blue Shield provides a 2027 comparison of FEP Blue Focus, FEP Blue Basic and FEP Blue Standard, including premiums, deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums.

🔎 Before You Make Your Election

Take a few minutes to compare:

• Premiums — How much will come out of each paycheck?

• Self vs. Self Plus One vs. Self & Family — Don't assume Self Plus One is always cheaper.

• Deductible — How much do you pay before the plan begins paying certain expenses?

• Copayments and coinsurance — What will you pay when you receive care?

• Prescription coverage — Check your medications and their coverage.

• Provider network — Make sure your doctors, hospitals and specialists participate.

• Out-of-pocket maximum — Know your potential maximum expenses.

• Your family's needs — Consider expected medical care, prescriptions and family coverage for the coming year.

💡 One Important Reminder

Self Plus One is not always cheaper than Self & Family.

For some plans, the employee premium for Self & Family is actually lower than Self Plus One. Compare both options before making your election. OPM specifically warns enrollees about this situation on its Open Season website.
